ED HUYLER MEMORIAL AWARD

This prestigious award is given to a person who has dedicated their life to the sport of judo as Ed Huyler did in his lifetime. Mr. Ed Huyler was the coach for the Dojo of Ocean County in Brick New Jersey. Mr Huyler, although a brown belt for many years, produced numerous junior, high school, collegiate, and senior champions. Mr. Jesse Goldstein 1980 Olympian was Sensei Huyler's student. He brought the best out of athletes and expected and only accepted the best from all his students. I was honored to be considered part of his dojo and to act as a pallbearer at his funeral. Ed Huyler was a very special person. Our award in his memory is very prestigious and a great honor for the recipients.

2007 - Mark Roosa

Lou, Joe and all the Liberty Bell organization,

Just a quick note, now that I've recovered, to thank you guys for the honor of receiving this award. I've always been impressed by the way you take the time to recognize and remember the people that contibuted to your development. I never met Ed Huyler, but I have known similar "unsung heroes' in my judo career. My students were very proud, and embarrassed me again last night in class. We've been traveling to Philly for twenty years now looking for high level competition, and we've never been disappointed. The Liberty Bell is an awesome shiai, and you guys do a terrific job. Thanks again.

Mark Roosa - Ulster Budokai

2007 - Mr. and Mrs. Grunberg (MD)

Lou,
Mike Grunberg and Anne Marie Grunberg, they are a very generous people. They show up and help set up local tournaments for us, Huio, Shufu, and Maryland Judo Inc. Mike Grunberg is Shufu's registration chairman. At tournaments, he helps with registration, then when registration is done, he moves to the head table to work the brackets and score the matches. Anne Marie either volunteers to work timing/scoring or she referees. Both volunteer to teach beginner's class when they could be working on their judo. Both are involved with the running of the club. Anne Marie is our secretary, she is being groomed to take over the treasurer's job. Mike G comes to our meetings and volunteers for tasks. During our next elections I am sure he will move into a seat on the executive board. They just give & give. It transfers down to the kids, two are referees and competitors. The third kid fights and works the timing/scoring tables. The whole family (all 5 of them) attends referee clinics, competitor clinics, and timing/scoring clinics. Like most judo families, scheduling of all life events occurs around the judo schedule. They hit all the tournaments with our team. They are just super people. We are very fortunate to have them in our club and our Yudanshakai.
I appreciate you considering them for the award.
Kurt
